Yet Another Terrorist Threat Against Civilians Who Have Nothing to Do With Israel
The events in Somalia recently have been interesting. The Somalian government joined by the Ethiopians have had some measure of success in forcing Islamic fighters to retreat. I am not familiar enough to comment in detail on the situation. The thing that jumped out at me is a comment at the end of a Washington Times article on the subject (emphasis mine):
When the U.S. invaded Iraq we saw another wave of terror against civilians. Roadside bombs, car bombs, suicide bombs. Then the excuse was that Iraq was under "occupation". Again, no support for these drastic measures but they understood them.
Now in the Somalia conflict when the going gets a little tough for a group of Islamic radicals who want to impose their law by force on a legitimately recognized government the answer is--suicide bombings. This has nothing to do with Israel. Nothing to do with "American Imperialism".
Islamic radicals continue to make targeting civilians their weapon of choice to bend the world to their will. I have written on this topic many times. I have predicted that soon the excuse of the day for a civilian attack will become as trivial as not liking the look on somebody's face. Civilian targeting is the most dangerous thing threatening civilization at this time, yet the world yawns and sleeps or misplaces their concern in other areas. If the world body does not wake up, suicide bombing will come to the hometowns of many.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, whose military openly joined the war Sunday after weeks of quietly aiding the Somali government, said his forces had completed about half their mission.First, we had the suicide bombings in Israel. These were highly criticized and in my opinion dealt a public relations body blow to the Palestinian cause. Suicide bombers were (and continue to be) glorified and their families provided with sums of money after the deed. Even Saddam Hussein was paying out to these families. We saw references in blogs and news reports that seemed quite sympathetic to these bombers. When challenged about these sentiments, they denied supporting the suicide bombers but understood them. These were people oppressed by Israel. They were desperate and had no other options but to take such drastic measures.
"As soon as we have accomplished our mission -- and about half of our mission is done, and the rest shouldn't take long -- we'll be out," Mr. Meles told reporters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
He also claimed Islamist militiamen had suffered heavy casualties, citing internal reports from Ethiopia's military.
"I hear reports of close to 3,000 injured in Mogadishu's hospitals ... and well over 1,000 might have died," Mr. Meles said.
Both sides have claimed to have killed hundreds of their enemy, but independent observers have not been given access to the battlefields to check on the reports.
Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, leader of the Council of Islamic Courts' executive body, said the group had told its troops to withdraw from some areas.
"The war is entering a new phase," he said. "We will fight Ethiopia for a long, long time and we expect the war to go everyplace."
Sheik Ahmed declined to explain his comments in greater detail, but some Islamist leaders had threatened a guerrilla war to include suicide bombings in Ethiopia's capital.

People are in total denial when it comes to the Islamic Threat. And you're right, it goes beyond the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. They like to claim that the reason for increased terrorism is the supposed Israeli 'occupation' and the presence of western military in the middle-east. The religion has a history of expansionist and imperalist tendencies which pre-date even the Ottoman wars.

I wonder why when the british controll in "palestine" or the Ottoman control there we didn't see any "resistance" like they said.
and before 67 the palestinians lived in jorden and egypt, you don't see them resist...
there is two answer about this issue.
first they can't accept someone who don't arab take their lands but if he is arabs and he has power so its fine.
second is that the world watching israel all the time and let those terrorists legitimation.
in the past this wouldn't happend.
I don't want to think what the russians would doing to lebanon if some militia was attack it, beleive me israel was sweet compare to them.
but no one whould say them nothing because they not lisen to the world, do you compare what U.S.A doing in iraq, to what israel doing in lebanon? how much casualties there is in iraq every year and how much in lebanon, only in this November died more people in iraq than in lebanon...but still israel got a lot more criticism, and this keep those terrorist doing what they do.
for arabs eyes israel lost in this summer war, and this is maybe true,
but why? because the world didn't let israel to do what they should do. what that you don't understand its that is your lost also, U.S is the only country that understand this, but the europinians will sorry on this later, all this criticism saved hezbolla ass.
they don't understand that they heart not only in israel but also in lebanon, and the other arabs regime that tried to get rid from the terrorist, hezbolla now is the savor of the arabs, they are the only one who can "win" the west, now the arabs has hope. soon or later it will be hamas, than El-Queda.
that it, you want to win someone? a great nation? its easy: make them go to your land, fight with them in guerrilla war, fight in cevilians places, and you only need to survive that all... the media will hit this nation from inside, the world opinion will hit this nation from outside, and you won...another won for the terror.
soon or later it will come for europ and than we will see how righteous they are.
this is nothing to do with israel and the palestinians, they see this a war between religons and races.

incognito and anonymous,
thanks for visitng and leaving your comments. Every time I read references to the Ottoman Empire, I realize I need to go back and refresh my history on that period. I think there are a lot of answers to questions I will find by doing such a study. I am confident those answers will be nothing like the rubbish the media and terrorist sympathizers try to give us.

I'm very surprised to reach another year's end without a suicide bombing in this country.
I wonder if there has ever been a study to determine where all these explosives come from. If that could be determined - I think I know where I would direct our next lot of cruise missiles.

Russia and China, more than likely.

incognito, you are probably right. It would also make sense why it is difficult to dry up the source. Bush would not target a known asset of Russia or China and risk a massive expansion in the war. It is obvious that these two countries have their hands in many areas. The media is very irresponsible in neglecting calling them on it as well.
